We love using ALPS at Alec Hunter. It is well understood by senior and middle leaders, it demonstrates clearly what each student should be expected to achieve and challenge is built in at an appropriate level. The data that we get from ALPS really helps us to improve as a school.
Trevor Lawn found Alps:
- Slightly improves teaching efficiency
- Significantly improves school processes“Middle Leaders have a better understanding of what 'success' looks like in terms of progress rather than attainment. The simplicity of the ALPS grading system, based on the national dataset and taking account of prior attainment as the baseline, helps those leaders who are less conversant with data to feel confident that they understand the standard expected. The 'what if' function is absolutely invaluable in demonstrating how the grading will shift upwards if they are able to move certain students up by a grade or two.”
- Moderately improves attainment“Teachers can target their support due to having a better grasp of what each individual should be expected to achieve as a minimum and this in turn drives up attainment.”

ALPS is great for looking at individual and department level data - and whole year group. We can see which students are not achieving targets across different subject areas. I would really like to see an overall summary of where the school is against Welsh performance measures as I have to put data into a separate spreadsheet in order to do this.
Lucy Bunce found Alps:
- Moderately improves teaching efficiency“Identify which students to focus on for intervention when looking to raise overall attainment”
- Moderately improves school processes“Deciding which students should be given additional study sessions”
- Moderately improves attainment

ALPs has been very powerful as a tool to support the effective analysis of value added data at all levels within school.
Ceri Garlant found Alps:
- Moderately improves teaching efficiency“We use ALPs after each progress check to identify whole school those subject areas where pupil progress is a concern. This supports senior leaders in challenging and supporting middle leaders as part of a cycle of standards meetings and also helps middle leaders to identify strengths and areas needing development at subject level. The class analysis tool is particularly useful, as is the analysis for groups of learners.”
- Significantly improves school processes“ALPs supports our self evaluation processes both at whole school level and faculty level. It provide robust and honest value added analysis that we can use to identify what practices are working well and areas which need development.”
- Significantly improves attainment“The 'what if' analysis is perfect for use by teaching colleagues and faculty leaders for identifying which individual students will have the greatest impact on outcomes if intervention is put in place. The analysis also allows us as a school and within faculties to identify which groups of learners may not be making the expected progress.”
May 2024
All staff this year have said how much they like it, although I don't think they use the site themselves, just what the data manager produces.
Amy Hornblow found Alps:
- Moderately improves teaching efficiency“Extra sessions for those who are on grade borders. Teachers can see how students in their subject compare to other subjects and address any inconsistencies. Teachers use "what if" functions to look at impact on their results as a whole and then put measures in place”
- Moderately improves school processes“Our data manager now gives us all data drop information in one colour coded spreadsheet. This helps to inform students target setting and interviews with form tutors/HOY/parents”
- Slightly improves attainment“I am only neutral as we have only started using it more consistently this year across all subjects through our data manager.”
