What is Sumdog Maths?
Sumdog uses games-based adaptive learning to build fluency and boost confidence and engagement in maths for children aged 5-14.
Through our award-winning app or web-version, Sumdog enables you to set targeted practice for individuals, classes or groups, to complement your teaching using more than 450,000 high-quality multiple choice questions, aligned to your curriculum. You can also assess and analyse student progress by using our ready-made maths tests mapped to the Ready-to-progress criteria, White Rose Maths Scheme of Learning for KS1/2 and NCETM Checkpoints for KS3 in England, the Curriculum for Excellence Benchmarks in Scotland and Common Core Standards in the US.
Students can play over 30 games and learn alongside each other, whilst working towards their own personalised goals, boosting their confidence and reducing any anxiety they might be feeling towards maths. They are rewarded for their achievements through collectable badges and coins for correct answers which they can spend on their own avatar, 3D house or garden - really boosting pupil engagement.
A recent study actually found that using Sumdog for 30 minutes a week almost doubled children’s maths fluency progress. It encourages regular practice, covers key maths skills and supports a maths mastery approach, using positive reinforcement to ensure pupils stay on task, learn more effectively, and are invested in their own success.
Students can also compete with schools across their country in regular regional and national Sumdog maths contests.

The variety of games and the way they are integrated into the work set has seen excellent engagement from the children. The interface is extremely easy to use and accounts are managed/setup automatically. One flaw - that staff accounts cannot be managed manually so that temporary staff and teaching assistants can also be involved.

I really dislike Sumdog. The competitive nature and countdown is no use for children struggling or need extra time to get it. My child gets panicked and flustered which leads to wrong answers, not concentrating and knocks confidence as she “loses”. Very detrimental app

Yes, I have used the program for years and found it works well for my gifted students. It is different from what they are doing in the regular classroom. The students love the national, state and county competitions and now that I can create my own it increases excitement. I think allowing the coin rewards makes it more interactive for teacher and student.

Love the new diagnostic test feature, really helpful since we do not have any end of year test data, to see how student did with the skills over the summer. I saw areas my students needed more work on. I was able to do an early remote lesson on geometry and prime and composite numbers, concepts my students still had trouble with from Spring data.”
