What is Smashed Online?

Smashed Online is a new and dynamic e-learning programme on the causes and consequences of underage drinking for 11-14 year olds. It forms one part of the global Smashed Project which includes both live in-school performances and e-learning resources in over 30 countries worldwide.

The programme is between 60 and 90 minutes long and is framed around a high-quality, cinematic story of three teenagers and their early experiences with alcohol. Featuring a host of interactive activities to improve knowledge, social awareness and decision-making skills around underage drinking, the course is fully linked to the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study for the age group. It can be completed individually by students on any device or delivered as a whole class activity led by teachers on an interactive whiteboard. Smashed Online can be completed short episodes, with user progress tracked to allow users to pick up where they left-off, or as a single 60-90 minute session.

We want young people to learn about the dangers of alcohol in a realistic context, exploring real situations they may face as they grow up. The episodic clips allow students to witness the causes and consequences of underage drinking, developing their confidence and social awareness to make better choices in their own lives.

Feedback from pupils was very positive. This was done at the end of a 4 week project based on alcohol and pulled the task together really nicely. Pupils loved doing it online and getting a certificate for it, which they were proud to show, and was a really easy way for me to "mark" their work. It was good that it wasn't a "school" task.

Jo found Smashed Online:
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
Pupils more aware of the impact of alcohol
  • Slightly improves behaviour or wellbeing
Project done during lockdown, so hard to comment on this.
  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency and productivity
Done as part of lockdown project. Easy to set and easy to mark.
  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
Easy for pupils to prove they have completed the course by showing the certificate.
  • Does not save school money
  • Does not improve school processes

It was a fantastic resource for our students during lock down. It covered issues which we know were challenging for some students at that time, and the professionalism of the resource package meant that my teachers could focus their energy on adapting follow-up challenges to specific student needs.

Jim Connolly found Smashed Online:
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
The impact of alcohol use on relationships
  • Moderately improves behaviour or wellbeing
Confidence in decision making Confidence in expressing opinions on alcohol use Ability to evaluate the impact of decision making Empathy- looking at an event from a range of perspectives.
  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency and productivity
In our case we used Smashed as part of distance learning during the Covid19 lock down, as it came as a well developed package it allowed our staff to concentrate on development of learning, not the resource.
  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
As mentioned, this was a brilliant package for us during lock-down. It was a great refresher for students who had seen the live performance, and allowed us to introduce a new year group to the story. My teacher's workload was significantly reduced by this resource.
  • Slightly saves school money
It has as we haven't had to organise a school performance, but in all honesty we would prefer a love show once that is possible in the future.
  • Slightly improves school processes
I'm not quite sure what this question means.

Really easy to use. Free resource.

Ben Lane found Smashed Online:
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
Pupils had greater awareness of how drinking can affect the decisions they make
  • Slightly improves behaviour or wellbeing
  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency and productivity
This was really useful during the COVID pandemic in providing students with a blended learning model which they could engage with at home.
  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
Reduced teacher workload significantly. I was able to set this assignment for an entire Year Group to complete at home as part of a blended learning approach saving 10 different class teachers having to set their own individual work.
  • Slightly saves school money
It was a free resource. We would not have been able to pay for this provision so it was extremely beneficial.
  • Moderately improves school processes
Helped with our blended learning approach during COVID.

  • Slightly improves behaviour or wellbeing
It is difficult to say because we are teaching students skills and knowledge more to be used outside of school
  • Moderately improves teaching efficiency and productivity
Being able to coordinate your resources with existing resources and provide interesting, interactive lessons
