What is Reading Plus?
Reading Plus is an online reading programme that's packed full of engaging texts for pupils to explore and enjoy.
It teaches silent reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary with software that meets each pupil's individual reading level.
Reading Plus supports good teaching first. And provides ongoing help for every pupil – with actionable reports for teachers.
How does Reading Plus work?
Reading Plus begins with an adaptive assessment that pupils complete on their own and without any intervention from their teacher. These results provide a baseline and the data-driven starting point for a pupil's journey through the programme.
Weekly assignments are set with personalised instructions for pupils, these include visual skills development for eye-tracking, reading tasks for comprehension and fluency, and vocabulary tasks.
How is Reading Plus implemented in schools?
We know that deciding to adopt a reading intervention is a big step for any school.
The key to making it work? Experience tells us that the way to get the results you're looking for – and that we'd expect to achieve – is to initiate and sustain a culture of growth.
That's why, when you decide to adopt Reading Plus in your school, one of our Dedicated Reading Consultants and our UK Support Team will work alongside you, making sure that implementation is smooth and successful, every step of the way.
What results can you expect with Reading Plus?
Reading Plus is designed to accelerate reading growth for pupils at all reading proficiency tiers – and fast. After just 40 to 60 hours of using Reading Plus, your Emerging readers will make significant gains to close the achievement gap.
And your Expected and Exceeding pupils at age-related expectations? Within 40 to 60 hours of using Reading Plus, they'll improve their proficiency and increase their reading levels, gaining the ability to master higher volumes of complex text with confidence.

Lexile tracking reportsThe Reading Plus Lexile Tracking Report is designed to evidence formative pupil progression in reading speed, comprehension, and vocabulary. And it identifies target pupils who require further support or intervention. We send these reports on a termly basis covering years 3 to 6. Skills tracking reportsSkills tracking reports identify children’s strengths and areas for development to help inform interventions. When children complete a reading selection on Reading Plus, they answer 10 questions to test their deeper understanding and comprehension anchor skills. We have correlated these anchor skills to the content domain reference for KS2 to help provide an insight into pupils’ overall levels of performance. We send these reports in preparation for Year 5 pupils progressing to Year 6 so that teachers can identify immediately where pupils require support to become secure in the skills areas that require development. |

Reading Plus has had a huge impact on our school. It is popular with parents, teachers and children alike. The children enjoy the texts they read, find out lots of new information from them and like how the Reading Plus dashboard looks. They love the competitive nature of the leaderboard and the certificates they get when they level up.
Sarah found Reading Plus:
- Moderately reduces teacher workload“Reading Plus saves two lessons of reading planning, which can take up to an hour each.”
- Significantly reduces attainment gap“We have had some 'hard to reach' pupils who have not read a single, physical book, but have attained well despite this, using Reading Plus. We have had significant successes with large percentages of pupils making 3 or more years progress, with the most being 8 years of progress in one year.”
- Significantly provides school data“We share the Reading Plus reports with parents at parents' evening. Data has also been shared trust-wide and to governors.”
- Moderately improves attainment“We have seen a large impact on reading fluency speeds for most children.”
- Significantly builds student knowledge

Reading Plus is a fantastic teaching tool that enables myself at Reading Lead to track the progress of every child from Y2 to Y6 using Reading Plus. It supports our reading teaching and saves so much time on assessments, giving us current data so we can best support our children.

When it works, it really works well. Practitioners need to be careful when selecting the right students who will benefit from it. Some pupils love the competitive set-up, and the rewards are very useful. It is possible, however, for pupils to 'park' themselves in sessions when the task becomes repetitive.

I think it still has a long way to go. For example our top set students have often completed it which means we then have more reading to set as we use it for a measurable homework

It is very expensive and takes a lot of teacher effort to get pupils engaged. I think it is a good system and would be better if it was cheaper, had more links to the curriculum and was easier accessible to both teachers and pupils who want to access it like their peers but need much more support - possibly an option where the comprehension and questions were read to pupils - or at least some of it.
Mrs found Reading Plus:
- Slightly reduces teacher workload“Those pupils who are able to access it independently mean it does reduce teacher workload. For those pupils who find it difficult to log in and need a lot of support to access it - it is much more difficult, particularly in Year 2/3 when it is first introduced. It isn't always easy to navigate for those teachers who do not use it often or are new to it so as the lead I am often trying to show/train others on how to use it.”
- Slightly reduces attainment gap“I have no evidence to say either way”
- Slightly provides school data“We can see how a pupil has advanced through RP however I would like to be able to see a reading age or a measurable target outside of RP.”
- Slightly improves attainment
- Moderately builds student knowledge“Pupils have said to me, I read that on RP. It would be good to have more readings linked to the currciulum.”

Yes, overall, I can see the merit in this system. I have observed first-hand the improvements that Reading Plus can make on reading skills. However, I tent to agree with our students- much of the reading material is bland.
Karen found Reading Plus:
- Moderately reduces teacher workload“Most teachers use Reading Plus to cover one full English lesson per week. This is used as assessment time, we can gather data on progress etc. It also allows teachers time to mark while discretely monitoring Reading Plus progress.”
- Moderately reduces attainment gap“Yes, last year we had a year 11 boy who presented with signs of dyslexia. He also had significant gaps in his reading ability in relation to his age (assessed at 9y 4months at the start of y11). He began to use Reading Plus every day at the start of the academic year and stuck to his prescribed programme of 20 min daily sessions for the year. He left school the following summer, to go to college, with a GCSE level 3 in English Language and a Functional Skills Level 2 qualification. Importantly, his reading age improved significantly to 13y 6months.”
- Moderately provides school data“For the most part, I feel the data systems are far too complex and overly complicated to read and use. However, I do like the reading speed measure.”
- Moderately improves attainment“Please see example provided above. This student also did well in other GCSEs as a direct result of being able to read fluently and with much more confidence.”
- Slightly builds student knowledge“A common complaint from our students is the lack of variety in the reading material. They often feel bored by the choices. Therefore, I would have to say that often the reading material can have a detrimental impact on attainment.”
