I just think it is such a useful tool that benefits both pupils and teachers. Why wouldn't anyone want that?

Charlotte Howell found LiteracyPlanet:
  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
Marking homework - literacy Planet does this for us. Also, pupils can access the platform independently which saves us having to produce extra resources for literacy-based activities.
  • Moderately provides school data
We use the scores to check student performance and help to show areas for improvement.
  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency
It is not usual to have repeated grammar focussed-lessons but Literacy Planet allows this in a fun, entertaining way for pupils.
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
Especially for Spag, vocab and comprehension.

I think I have explained. It’s time consuming, and doesn’t benefit our less able students. Our more able students might benefit but if they do it only widens a gap. That’s bad in education.

Corrin found LiteracyPlanet:
  • Does not reduce teacher workload
Setting different work for each student is time consuming. Following up on the work is time consuming.
  • Slightly provides school data
The data isn’t consistent or reliable in many cases. Levels attributed to students vary widely to levels attributed to students from other highly rated independent programs
  • Does not improve teaching efficiency
It varies from student to student and thus isn’t efficient. A more able student will engage and progress more. A less able student is often disengaged by some content which is out of their ZPD by the fact it is auditory vs sight spellings- they feel defeated and are reluctant to engage. It also goes against how most vocabulary and spelling is taught. We show them the word, break down its parts, define its parts, understand its spelling, and then learn the word. Your program has a voice read it. It’s difficult for me to understand some of the words particularly as the student may have never encountered such a word before- even at their level- and then they fail and don’t want to do it. In some cases it makes them feel like it’s set for a young child and they feel like people believe they aren’t clever.
  • Does not build student knowledge
They like the arcade. No it doesn’t help knowledge- at least it hasn’t for any of my students. I drag them through it and they are disengaged most of the time reluctantly doing the tasks to avoid a sanction.

10 would have been given if it had the function of printing of data reports easily, and being able to share data with parents mor efficently. However, this is a superb programme that enable stsudents to develop their literacy skills and can be used in order to differentiate according to the their ability and what they need to improve on. I also love the fact that they can be set missions again and again and this can show how far they have improved on that mission.

Charmain Hull found LiteracyPlanet:
  • Moderately reduces teacher workload
Less marking, as missions are self marking, time freed up to have discussion with students regarding progress etc., lesson planning reduced.
  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency
Able to accurately track student progress, quick setting of lessons for all classes if needed. Allows staff the time needed to ensure students are doing the programme correctly.
  • Slightly improves school processes
Have yet to use the programme to the point where it begins to have an impact on school processes, at the moment it is only being used within the English department.
  • Slightly improves parent engagement
Neutral as we have not rolled our the parental engagement of the programme as yet. Though I do feel Lietracy Planet should have a parental portal that shows parentstheir childs data.
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
Build upon, practice or develop their knowledge on all elements of grammar and spelling significantly.

It provides a wide range of English activities which is amazing. Once the activities are set, the children can login and play straight away. The activities are marked which makes the work load easier for teachers. Different activities can be set for different children without them knowing what year group they are working at. The data provided is really useful. I really like that a mission is automatically reassigned if a child does not pass it. Spelling lists can be made which is a great way for the children to practise them each week. An area of improvement would be, I find it difficult to know what activities have already been set - at the moment you need to click on the activity and see if a child has completed it yet or not. It would be easier if the activities had a tick next to them if they have already been set for the children or completed.

Samantha Moore found Literacy Planet:
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
Grammar activities, comprehension and spelling games
  • Moderately improves teaching efficiency and productivity
It helps to consolidate a grammar objective after the English lesson.
  • Moderately reduces teacher workload
It has been great for Spelling practise. The children are keen to practise and learn their new words on LiteracyPlanet.
  • Moderately improves school processes
It provides individual data on each child's area of learning in English. Teachers can use this data to help them make a judgement of where a child is and gaps in their learning.
  • Slightly improves parental engagement

Activities and lessons are difficult to find in each strand as they are all in a bit list. It would be helpful if they were categorised further either by CfE code, alphabetical or some other way of organising them to help find what you are looking for more quickly.
