You are on a rolling contract and can get stuck into a package that isn't relevant to your current cohort. There is no flexibility if you miss the deadline

Reply from Kognity:Dear Vicky,  Thank you for your review. We’re sorry to hear that you are not happy with your Kognity experience. We make sure to be upfront about our subscriptions having a rolling contract, and we also make every effort to highlight exactly when a subscription is due to be renewed so that schools can make adjustments ahead of time. In this case, we were unable to make contact with you after multiple attempts, so the automatic renewal ultimately went ahead in line with the agreed contract. Please feel free to reach out to your Kognity account manager or email support@kognity.com, so that we can look into how your subscription could better meet your school's needs. We can of course have some flexibility if you feel an error has occurred. Thank you again for your review, and we look forward to connecting with you. Regards, Josefin and the Kognity team

English Teacher

The English B textbook still needs revising for mistakes. My students and I have come across many of them while solving the activities. I've reported some, but not enough time to report all of them. I can't see students' responses. I’m new to the platform and my experience has been good, but honestly not great. The textbook material and resources are helpful, yet it is hard to check student progress for reading assignments (there is no place where to assess the end of each section short activity the book proposes). Only a progress bar where you can see if the student actually clicked/checked on the material you assigned. However, i’m trying a new approach. Reading/Listening together in class and creating google classroom submission assignments for them to upload the activity proposed. Most of those activities include answers that students can check right away, so I don’t find them particularly helpful, The platform also lets you create ‘question assignments’ in which you have a question bank to choose from or include your own. I think the idea is cool, but I don’t find it very useful. Example: I created a question style assignment (all from the same subtopic), yet when my students answered them (even when they had read the assigned text) the questions weren’t directly related to the reading. They were more about language use than reading or listening comprehension they need for paper 2. I don’t know if it’s as useful as I thought. On another note. I also find it annoying I can’t modify the textbook by choosing what to show students, they get to see everything including SL assignments (I teach HL). If it’s an online platform, it would be a lot cooler to select only the subtopics I want them to see and show them only the activities of HL.

Reply from Kognity:Hi Ines, Thank you for sharing this feedback! I am sorry to hear that you have found some mistakes in our brand new English B book—we are always happy to make corrections as needed! Our authors are excellent, but they are still human so we sometimes find errors too. The nice thing is that since our book is fully online, it is easy to make updates right away. Regarding our assignment functionality, there are ways to see student responses to both Reading and Question assignments, and we would be happy to help set up some additional training for you at your convenience to ensure you have a good familiarity with all our tools. When selecting questions, you can choose from a broad subtopic (Ex. “Chapter 1.2”) or a more specific theme within a subtopic (Ex. “Chapter 1.2.4). I’m glad to see you have been exploring many ways to use the platform and would be happy to find some time to set up some extra training for you! Mark, Kognity
Ines found Kognity:
  • Moderately reduces teacher workload
Self-correction is a plus sometimes, not for extended answers though. Also because some of the right answers as rendered as wrong.
  • Does not significantly improve attainment
  • Slightly builds student knowledge
I can't attribute much impact, it's just an aid that contributes to the overall impact in the class.

For the reasons shared above. Kognity first provides a very good textbook on the IB material. This reading, combined with the school textbook (Oxford), gives students two views which can help remove somewhat incorrect concepts which arise from reading only one source. Second, Kognity provides a large bank of questions at two levels for students to practice their mastery. These along with problems assigned from the school text give a good and broad range of experience with the material for the student. Finally, Kognity provides the option of student dueling with the material which appeals to the more competitive types. The only downside is the grading of problems which look only at the answer which must be in one of a number of formats rather than the method used to get the answer.

Bob found Kognity:
  • Slightly reduces teacher workload
    a. In the sciences, Kognity provides a large body of questions both simple and complex and this saves time making up new questions for the students. b. The teacher has the option of having Kognity grade the work, but this has difficulties which have yet to be satisfactorily solved. For instance, a student may write the correct answer but not in a form expected by Kognity and it will be marked incorrectly. Further, even if the student gets an incorrect answer, it may only be due to a calculator error and the method is correct. Since the method is more important than the answers (in the sciences at least), this can really gives the student the wrong idea about his competence. Hence, my main use of the questions is to hand them out and I grade them to see how the problems were solved.
  • Moderately improves attainment
Students become more proficient by working more and a variety of problems. By combining the two levels of problems from Kognity with those found in our textbook (not to mention Kognity's textbook, which, in most cases, is better than ours) the students get a large number of problems to work. Those who are diligent to complete the assigned work will be better prepared for the IB exams.
  • Moderately builds student knowledge
By providing a good textbook on the IB material, the students get the same material from somewhat different perspectives and this helps dispel incorrect concepts.

There are no downsides to Kognity! It complements how we are already teaching our students, and makes different modes of learning (including distance learning and hybrid) easier. My students also love it as an extra resource.

Sarah found Kognity:
  • Moderately reduces teacher workload
It allows me to quickly set lesson plans for days when I have appointments or I'm unable to come to school. There are also lots of resources that can be integrated into existing lessons, saving time on finding resources or making new ones. The statistics showing who has read the sections and done the questions also saves time as this is all automatically checked and displayed graphically.
