What is The CREATE Education Project?

The CREATE Education Project was set up in 2014 with one aim - to support educators in bringing 3D printing and additive manufacturing technologies to young people, giving them industry skills to succeed in a rapidly expanding high-quality careers market. Additive manufacturing technologies encompass: 3D printers, 3D design, 3D scanning, 3D forming.

We work exclusively within the education sector, supporting schools, colleges and Universities and aim to bridge the gap between industry and education, breaking down barriers to allow young people and educational organisations to gain 3D printing and additive manufacturing skills from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 5. We further support Universities with their undergraduate and postgraduate courses as well as their ongoing research and development.

How we do this?

Community - We work in partnership with industry and education to ensure the advice and technology we offer are cutting edge.

Reliability - All products have been tested to ensure they are easy to use, simple to maintain, and cost-effective. We are the preferred UK education resellers for Mayku, Meltio, and Ultimaker.

Education - We believe in the power of education to transform, and supply our customers with the best use and best practice technology.

Accessibility - Our mission is to allow everyone a chance to develop the necessary career skills to seed innovation.

Teachability - The tackle the challenge of introducing any new technology into the classroom embed it effectively.

Economy - We do not believe that money should stand in the way of accessibility. We also offer a low cost loan scheme so that educators can try our technology before they buy.

Teaching Assistant

Used The CREATE Education Project weekly for 0–3 months

May 2024

Everything about this scheme is brilliant - the staff were fantastic and delivered the training at a good, understandable pace, and the training facility was interesting as it was their HQ and not just a hired space. I have learned how to use a 3D printer and apply that to a school setting, and the children have subsequently completed a project from the design stage to its conclusion (and loved every second of it). I hope I get to partake in another similar project in the future.

Tom Petersons found The CREATE Education Project:
  • Significantly increases student collaboration
Some more capable students were offering to assist those struggling - creating and strengthening bonds.
  • Slightly improves teaching efficiency
  • Significantly improves teacher knowledge
Before the training, I had little knowledge about practical uses of 3D printing in every day life, and almost no knowledge of how to use a 3D printer.
  • Moderately improves attainment
When there is a physical product at the end of a project, there is always a feeling of achievement - this was certainly seen with the children.
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
After discussing how 3D printers would probably become more common in the workplace, more than one child came to me the following day to discuss how they had researched 3D printing food, or ask further questions about other uses (mainly the potential to print human organs).

As a free resource for a very small school with a very small budget, this was invaluable. The children were really engaged with the topic and could talk about it with parents and in school assemblies. All children in upper KS2 were able to participate in the project, designing and making a 3D model they could take home.

Ed Gilbertson found The CREATE Education Project:
  • Significantly increases student collaboration
Children have been able to work together to create 3D models using CAD software and then print a 3D model.
  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency
Children have a real life example to see and watch when discussing the workings of a 3D printer.
  • Significantly improves teacher knowledge
The CPD gave teachers knowledge and skills on how to use a 3D printer but also knowledge about how the subject can be taught at primary school level.
  • Significantly improves attainment
Children are more engaged with the lessons/topic due to the practical elements and so children's knowledge, understanding and therefore attainment has increased.
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
A real life example of a 3D printer in use helps children understand in more detail

  • Significantly builds student knowledge

I have already recommended them to anyone who would listen! They have influenced our computing and DT already - so much that we have invested in 2x 3D printers because of it, and rewritten our curriculum to ensure all children and teachers from EYFS to Year 6 can learn about 3D modelling and 3D printing. The loan of the printer is just the start - the follow up resources, and the clear and personal guidance, were incredible.

Reply from The CREATE Education Project:Hi Gareth, thank you so much for your review and for spreading the word about The CREATE Education Project! We hope we can support you for many years to come!
Gareth Dyer found The CREATE Education Project:
  • Significantly increases student collaboration
The children worked collaboratively to create products using 3D modelling, on lessons provided by CREATE education, which they then built with the 3D printer loaned to us by CREATE Education
  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency
Firstly, the lesson plans provided were detailed yet easy to follow, as were the resources. More than this, however, the guidance on how to set up the 3D printer, especially to a novice like myself, was invaluable and saved time.
  • Significantly improves teacher knowledge
The guidance provided on how to set up and run a 3D printer efficiently was absolutely invaluable, and the personal support that I received, either over the phone, or Whatsapp etc, was incredible. I went from having no idea about 3D printing to teaching 3D modelling with confidence.
  • Significantly improves attainment
Not only in computing, but also in DT, the CREATE Education materials helped us to reach curriculum objectives which previously have been hard to hit for a Primary School.
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
A student voice survey showed that 100% (over 120 pupils) that took part in learning through the CREATE Education materials learned a lot about 3D printing, and could specify areas of knowledge that had developed (modelling, understanding limitations of 3D printing etc).

Leanne Smyth found The CREATE Education Project:
  • Significantly increases student collaboration
Pupils will work collaboratively on ICT projects and it has been great to see how they debug when using code.
  • Moderately improves teaching efficiency
From the session yesterday, it's great find out about the number of resources which are available and ready to use in the class. This definitely saves time creating lessons and thinking about progression throughout the school.
  • Significantly improves teacher knowledge
The 3D printing course was excellent, it was delivered using a good pace, it has provided me with a starting board to develop the use of the 3D printer throughout the school from using suitable programs for age level to the suggested progression.
  • Slightly improves attainment
I now have to develop the use of the 3D printer in school, from the information provided during the training, I know this will definitely impact attainment and provide pupils with the skills, knowledge and understanding in the focused area.
  • Slightly builds student knowledge
This is the first time I have accessed create education, the materials shared will have a significant impact on student's knowledge.

The project itself is exciting and makes you wonder the potential of 3D printing and it's future in education. Pupils enjoy getting stuck into projects like this and can be fascinating and rewarding watching their designs get 3D printed. However, I'd say the projects take a huge commitment from the teachers and allocating the time can be difficult. Although, with the right amount of time allocated, it's a great extension to the curriculum.

Reply from The CREATE Education Project:Hi Lucy - thank you so much for your review! We try to make sure we support teachers as much as we can with our wealth of free resources. Why not check them out here: https://www.createeducation.com/resources-landing/
Lucy Watkins found The CREATE Education Project:
  • Moderately increases student collaboration
Working in teams to design a 3D model or learning from each other when using the OnShape software.
  • Slightly improves teaching efficiency
The project is broken down into sections so it can be easily translated across to the pupils, the teachers guide with the Inspiring Lancashire project aids with understanding.
  • Significantly improves teacher knowledge
In person training on 3D printing and software use on OnShape and workshops taken place within the school provides more understanding.
  • Moderately improves attainment
I think bringing their design to life through 3D printing, brings them a sense of achievement that they created that!
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
In the workshops and through implementing it into parts of our technology classes, they are understanding that 3D printing is an avenue they can take to bring a design into a physical form oppose to other materials like wood or acrylic.
